The work of Ilse Schrama (1964) is inspired by three themes: nature, children and world religions. Her documentary and indirect approach to these subjects leads to single artworks and to stories, as well as a cross-fertilization between the two genres. Her photos are transparent and sober.
Her work has a timeless character that comes across as an iconic summary of human constants. The natural world is our home, children are part of it and only gradually they become members of a man-made spiritual or religious system.
For her, this simple sentence opens a diverse, restless earth with wonders, contrasts and daily struggle and it motivates her to continue with these subjects.
Ilse Schrama was born on the island of Curacao in the Netherlands Antilles. She started working as an artist in 1993 after completing her studies in literature at the University of Amsterdam. In the mid nineties she lived in Scotland for some time and in 2000 she moved to New York for a year to work with Magnum photographer Steve McCurry. She now lives and works in Amsterdam.
Lux photo gallery has work available from her series Eye Quote.
Ilse Schrama about Eye Quote:
Visual experiences, resonating with memories and thoughts, result in moments of alienation and rapture, which I would call experiences of beauty. This kind of fleeting moment forms the impulse to make a photo.
Eye Quote is a series of works made during the years 2003-2006.
