Eddo Hartmann graduated in 1996 from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He worked for several years as an assistant to photographers (Anton Corbijn) and filmmakers. In 1999 he started his own studio in Amsterdam.
In his studio, besides his work on assignments by add agencies en design studios, Hartmann creates his autonomous work. His work is known for its esthetic compositions and a specific use of light. The photographs have cinematographic quality and make the viewer explore new worlds created by Hartmann: ' a photographer wants to be an explorer and travel to places no one has ever been before, or even better; places no one has ever imagined' .
His carefully built compositions illustrate his love for 19th century photography in which different locations are presented to the viewer in almost a scientific and deterministic way. But besides beauty and technical perfection, Hartmann also wants his viewers to be touched emotionally by his work.
He uses the same approach when photographing objects: with special light he puts the objects in a sterile and sober environment. Humor and confusion both play a part in judging the images he produces. With his photos he likes to mystify the viewer in what they see.
